WEEK 9 - UDL CLASSROOM

 What is UDL ?

In the field of education, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a research-based approach that considers learner diversity from the outset of any design or planning process. The use of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to develop academic goals and curriculum has the potential to significantly alter how we teach, how students engage in learning, and how we assess what students learn. Incorporating Universal Design for Learning principles allows us to build flexibility into all areas of instruction from the start, rather than trying to retrofit a rigid curriculum, set of instructional materials, or tests to accommodate each student who happens to learn in a different way. Educators should make resources and content available in a variety of formats so that students have the option to take charge of their own learning experiences.

What is the best teaching approach ?

The element that I would like to include in my teaching approach is flexible environment and variety of materials.

Universal Design for Learning encourages adaptability in the flexible environment. The good environment gives a huge positive impact for students. As a result, students have the ability to work in a variety of ways in a UDL classroom. This contains areas for peaceful solitary work, small and big group work, as well as group instruction and instruction in small groups. Sometimes students need a place where they can make group discussion. In other words, they require a venue where they can make discussions while also feeling at ease. While doing individual work, students can choose to wear earphones or headphones if they need to block out background noise. As a teacher we need to be creative and let the students choose the best way for their study because the environment is important to increase their study spirit.

Materials for study are also important for students. As an educator, we need to give a variety of material so that they can choose the material that can make them easy to understand. There are many tools that can create the best materials. Variety of materials include, the best to illustrate and reinforce new content, use materials such as online resources, videos, podcasts, PowerPoint presentations, Canva, and e-books. Since now we are using online learning so educators must be creative when giving materials to attract students to stay on track. Hope that if we give a variety of materials they can choose the material to study to get a better understanding.

As educators we need to be creative so that our students have interest in learning. We need to think the best to make sure the student is not lost about the subject that we teach. We can apply the UDL classroom into our teaching methods.
That’s all from me. Comment down below if you have another suggestion for UDL classroom. Thank you!
